Road Construction Update

The re-surfacing of Hwy 19 from the interstate into Northfield has begun.  The road will remain open at the nursery and  to the west between Northfield and the Interstate it will also be open except for the short time that they are installing new culverts.  The detour is only 1/2 mile to the south onto Rice County 59 – or locally “Old Dutch Road”.   There’ll be some time delays, but you’ll always be able to reach us!

August 20th-  It appears that most of the construction is done on the road.  There are a couple of places a few miles down the road that the shoulder needs a little work on yet, but the new shoulder and asphalt is on now in front of the nursery!!  Smooth sailing…

From Owatonna/Faribault – by taking the Northfield exit off of I35 – there is an immediate right onto the detour.  Read More »

Kid’s Planting Day for Mom

Belinda – the daughter of our retail manager, Heidi Brosseau participated in the Planting Day for Mom this morning at the nursery.  She planted pansies and petunias for Heidi in a pretty pink planter after a little encouragement from Dad.

Even with the rain, we had a good turnout during the morning with kids planting something extra special for their present for Mother’s Day.  Since the rain may have kept some of you away this morning – you can certainly give Heidi a call this week and come on in with your little ones and still have them put together a Mother’s Day planter.

Kid’s Planting Day for Mom!

Our second annual Kid’s Planting Day for Mom is rapidly approaching.  We will be holding it on Saturday, April 24th starting at 10:30 am!

The kids will each be given a planter which they’ll fill with soil, their pick of several varieties of annuals and we will keep the planter here at the nursery until Mother’s Day weekend!  When the planters are picked up – we’ll add a fancy bow and a Mother’s Day plant pick to make it festive for Mom!  The cost of the seminar – including materials – is $5.  Pre-registration is encouraged.  It’s held in one of our production greenhouses so the kids are out of the elements in case of rain!

Call today and reserve a planting spot for your kids!

Facebook

We have a new Facebook page that I’m trying to keep up with.  Being seasonal, it’s hard to put things on there in the dead of winter, but now with a few things starting to happen and spring right on the doorstep – it’ll be much more relevant.  Just search for Knecht’s Nurseries & Landscaping and become a fan.   We’re going to be doing a contest or two on Facebook as we get into the gardening season so keep checking!

2010 Business Person of the Year

The Northfield Chamber of Commerce has named Leif the 2010 Business Person of the Year.  We are very proud of his award – he definitely deserves it.  He will receive his award at the banquet hosted by the Chamber on March 11th, 2010.  This is a wonderful way to head into spring.  Now only if the snow would start to melt!

Job Opportunties – Help Wanted

Full-time and part-time positions are available for people of all ages provided the candidate is capable of physically demanding work and has good people skills for positive interactions with customers.  Experience is preferred – with an emphasis on horiticultural knowledge.  We do have a limited number of positions available for people without a horticultural background provided they have the inclinaton and energy to work productively and learn quickly.

Most positions involve work with production of plant materials in our container plant production and field production areas as well as multi-tasking by assisting our retail customers as the need dictates during various times of the season.  Versatility is extremely valuable.  We do have one job available for a retail sales and shrub/perennial care position.  The ability to work some weekend days is mandatory – for all positions.  Ability to work in all weather conditions is also necessary.  Pay is commensurate with experience in the horticultural industry and general life work experience.

Labor Day Weekend Hours

The weather forecast is perfect – make the most of your last long weekend of Summer.  We’ll be here to help you with suggestions, picking out plants, and local delivery of soil and mulch products.  If you just need some advice – stop in and chat with our sales staff.

Saturday – 8 am to 5 pm            Sunday – 10 am to  4 pm                                Monday – 8 am to 5 pm

Tree Donation to the City of Northfield

P1010017This past week, our crews installed 12  balled and burlapped shade trees into two of the City’s parks.  Grant Park was the recipient of 3 hybrid Elms, 3 Oaks, 2 Maples and 3 Honeylocust trees.  Jefferson Park received an Autumn Blaze Maple.   Each year we donate trees to Northfield’s parks in appreciation of the support that the Northfield community gives our business.   We hope to be able to continue this program for many years to come.

Refrigerator Pickles

P1010012After what seemed to be a late start, my cucumbers are going crazy!  Just when I think I have them all picked, there is another one hiding between the vines.  We eat them fresh, top off salads, make a cream sauce as a side dish, Greek Salad, Garbanzo Bean Salad, make pickles, and more!

Heidi Brosseau, our retail manager, has shared her Grandma’s recipe for refrigerator pickles –

 The brine -

  • 1 c. white vinegar
  • 2 c. sugar
  • 1 T. celery seed
  • 1 T. salt

The vegetables -

  • 7 c. thinly sliced cucumbers
  • 1 c. thinly sliced green peppers
  • 1 c. thinly sliced onions

You mix the brine, and then pour it over the vegetables, stir and according to Grandma – put it all in an ice cream bucket, put the lid on and place it in the refrigerator.  Make them in the morning, and enjoy pickles with dinner!   Heidi puts hers in pint mason jars – and says that she usually triples the recipe.  Friends and relatives are the lucky recipients of her triple recipe!  (thank you)…  They keep for a month or so in the refrigerator, but no one really knows for sure since they don’t last that long!
