Proven Winners

hdr012We are proud to announce that we are a 2009 Proven Winners Certified Garden Center.  Through the iGarden program from Proven Winners, owners and employees are provided with plant selling tips, customer service tools and merchandising techniques to help them better serve consumers in helping them select and grow the right Proven Winners plant varieties for their individual gardening needs.  Each of our retail salespeople took a test based on this material, and once we all successfully passed this test, we became certified.

Being a certified garden center enables us to better serve the customers regarding their plant choices and questions.  If there are certain Proven Winner plants that you are specifically looking for – please contact us.  We can’t carry every plant, but we would do our best to obtain requested plants.

Amy’s New Baby

p1010026-1Amy Voight, one of our landscape designers, and her husband Nathan, welcomed a new baby boy to their family on March 28, 2009.  Timothy James Voight was also welcomed by his two older brothers – Caleb and Joshua.  He is absolutely adorable.  Little Timmy (as his brothers call him) will be keeping Mom busy for a little while, but Amy will soon be meeting with customers about their landscape questions and in helping them design a landscape just for them!

Congratulations, Amy & Nathan.

Minnesota Nursery & Landscape Association

2 This week we attended the annual convention of the Minnesota Nursery and Landscape Association held at the Minneapolis Convention Center.  Leif and I attended, as did our two designers, Kristin Lucas and Amy Voight and pictured  – our retail team  of Heidi Brosseau, Russell Lovetinsky and Cory Holcomb, and the landscape duo of Jim Westlund and Richard Middleton.

4 There are several seminars ranging on all kinds of topics from sales and marketing, landscape and installation, tree production, and garden center ideas.  There also is a large trade show where we visited vendors, got all kinds of ideas and the guys were able to look over all kinds of new equipment to add to their wish lists.  It’s a great way to get a early taste of Spring Fever and get fired up for the upcoming season.

Congratulations Heidi and Scott!!

On October 11, 2008, our retail manager, Heidi Gervais became Mrs. Scott Brosseau at a lovely wedding ceremony held at the Valley Grove Church, rural Nerstrand.

Heidi met Scott 2 1/2 years ago on a blind date in Duluth and as they say, the rest is history.   After a short honeymoon down to Ft. Lauderdale, Heidi will be back here at the nursery the end of next week.

Stop in and congratulate the new Mrs. Brosseau!

Trees Donated to the Old Memorial Field Park

We recently donated 12 trees to the Old Memorial Field Park (swimming pool site) here in Northfield.  Each year we like to donate trees to a park or public place here in Northfield.  This picture shows our landscape crew, Jim Westlund, Richard Middleton and Todd Marnie finishing the planting of one of the trees.

This year, we also donated trees that were planted by the high school track between Bridgewater Elementary and the Northfield Middle School.   In the past, we have also donated trees that were planted at the Soccer Field park.

This is our way of thanking the Northfield community for your continued business.

Annuals – Plan ahead for 2009

Now is a great time to start planning your beds for the spring of 2009!  By now you know what did and didn’t work this season and you can also see what other people have done and how it’s doing.  I can take full credit for very few combinations of annuals and perennials – most have been found by trial and error on my part or on the part of a fellow gardener.  P1010002So, make those notes now, take those pictures, and let yourself start dreaming about those colors, textures and combinations that are yet to be.

Pictured here is a glorious Morning Glory.  A blue that true will make anyone stop and take notice.  It’s like the sky dropped a little piece of itself and it landed on our trellis.  These Morning Glory vines may be annuals but they are wonderfully vigorous and fast growing climbers that can make quick work of a trellis or an arbor.  This year we planted them on the same trellis as our porcelain vine so that the trellis would fill in more quickly but also to extend the bloom season.

They’re Back – Go Team!

Ckids

This week we welcomed back the rest of our returning college and high school workers.  Pictured here are Peter Douglass, Kevin Vig and Kevin Borek and floating in air – Caitlyn Borek.

The guys are all in college and Caitlyn just graduated from Northfield High School this past weekend.  Peter and Kevin Borek have been with us eight summers now, Caitlyn is starting her 6th season here, and Kevin Vig is on round three!

They don’t come much better than this crew!   Thanks for being a part of our success!

To quote Kevin Vig – "Here at Knecht’s, it’s Go Team!"
