Spring Annuals

Friday, April 21st, 2006

We are selling annuals! Our first annuals are in - we have a great variety of cool season annuals - including pansies, snap dragons, and petunias. There are a few hanging baskets available - however - be ready to bring these in when nights get cool. The average frost free date in Minnesota is May 15th! Even though we have been above normal most of April - we can still be surprised by a night of frost!

Next week we’ll be getting in a full shipment of annuals and more hanging baskets!

Another addition to our annuals that we are excited about this year is our Succulent Bowls! These plants come in a real terra cotta bowl (not a plastic pot) and have approximately five different plants in them! You can keep them outside on your deck or entryway - and then bring them indoors later in the fall! We have a limited supply and with as gorgeous as they are - they’ll sell fast!

Northfield in Bloom

Friday, April 21st, 2006

Northfield is in Bloom - the bright blue of the Scilla which covers many of the lawns on the east side of town with an overcast of blue and green or perhaps it is the bright yellow of the Forsythia or the bright white of the Magnolias! Northfield is in bloom!

Scilla is a bulb that is planted in the ground however it will produce a seed head and self-seed itself causing the “field” of blue in many yards. Scilla should be planted in the fall for your wonderful spring display!

The Forsythia — no one ever recognizes the Forsytia when you walk by unless it’s spring. The bright yellow flowers come out in the spring - ahead of the leaves! These wonderful shrubs make a great specimen plant or in groups - make great hedges!

The Magnolia. One of the most gorgeous Magnolia trees is located just north and a little west of St. John’s Church here in town. This tree has been there many years and provides a breathtaking display every spring. There are several varieties of Magnolias that are hardy to Minnesota - the one pictured is a Merrill’s Magnolia. This plant will grow to upwards of 30 to 40 feet. The Royal Star is one of the shortest - at 10-15 feet in height and the Leonard Messel - which sports pink blossoms tops out at 20-25 feet. These plants are available in shrub form and in tree form!

We have the Forsythia and the Magnolias in stock right now - and in full bloom! Stop in and check them out!

Rain Barrels

Friday, April 7th, 2006

We are helping RENew Northfield in their fundraising efforts by displaying and handing out the order forms for their rainbarrels. You can help protect the Cannon River by collecting rainwater from downspouts, preventing storm water run-off and river pollution. There are grants available through the Cannon River Watershed Partnership which you can use if you apply before April 14th. We do have a copy of the grant application here at the nursery as well as from the Partnership.

These wonderful barrels came from a distillery in Kentucky. The rainbarrels will be put together on Earth Day on April 22nd at Bridge Square here in Northfield. The cost is $160 which includes $100 tax-deductible contribution. There are several choices of animal statues for the spigot.

Stop in at the nursery now and look at this wonderful rain barrel and support RENew Northfield in helping to protect the Cannon River!
