Planting of Spring Bulbs

Saturday, September 16th, 2006

Now is the time for planting of spring flowering bulbs. We have tulips, daffodils, crocus and hyacinth bulbs ready to become your splash of spring color. Spring bulbs need to be planted in the fall as they need to go through the winter dormancy period. Group together masses of the same color bulbs for a dramatic effect, or with different colors - there is no right or wrong when designing your bulb plantings. The tiny crocus bulbs pop through the late spring snow followed by daffodils and tulips. Think Spring (in the fall)!

Fall Perennial

Saturday, September 16th, 2006

Most people think of Sedums and Asters for fall perennials. An over-looked great perennial for the shade garden is Turtlehead. It is taller - about 30″ tall - rich deep green color and wonderful bright flowers. It does so well in the shade and with the bright flowers - puts a candlelight like glow into the shade garden.

Hail of a Sale

Tuesday, September 12th, 2006

The storm of August 24th will be long remembered here in Northfield - from the thousands of cars and roofs that are damaged to structure damage and to the damage to our plants! We are running a Hail Sale on plants that were damaged by the storm. There are tremendous savings of 60% on these plants. With hail damage, you will need to work with the plant a little - from some gentle pruning on deciduous trees to more aggressive pruning on some of the deciduous shrubs. On the evergreens, damage is slower to appear. Within a month or two, small areas that had gotten hit with a hail stone will start to turn brown requiring pruning out of the damaged area. Most shrubs and trees will fill in again, but it will be an extra season or two of growth flush. For those of you that are willing to do a little snipping and clipping - the values are worth the trip!
