Endless Summer Hydrangea

Perhaps the most asked question on maintenance that we have answered this year is how to protect the Endless Summer Hydrangea in the winter. The above photos are of our three Endless Summer we have in one of our display gardens here at the nursery. The first shows it as it looks today – after many frosts and with the coating of snow it received last night. The second photo shows Heidi Gervais, our Retail Manager, pruning it down to approximately 8 to 10 inches. After it has been pruned down, she is dumping mulch on it to a depth of 10 to 12 inches.

The bag of mulch is very easy to handle – you simply “dump” it on. In the spring around Mother’s Day, pull the mulch back and spread it on your garden or simply dispose of it. It will have provided that winter protection for your Endless Summer.

It took Heidi no more than about two minutes to accomplish this task (believe me, I know as I was standing there with the wind chill near zero waiting to take the pictures).
